Breathwork - a step by step introduction

We live in a world where the Health Service is under more and more pressure so may be it's time for us to take more responsibility for our own health and if that's how you're feeling right now, a breathwork session may be something to experience.

The people that I meet through breathwork all say the same thing - that at the very least, they leave with a greater understanding of how their breathing can affect their health and, in turn, their life.

Let's consider the benefits of breathwork

Conscious Connected Breathing can kick off a cascade of physical and mental benefits:

  • Improves respiratory system/lung capacity and boosts immune system

  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure moving from fight or flight to rest and digest

  • Releases stress, anxiety and alleviates depression leaving you feeling completely energised

  • Helps you let go of emotional baggage and negative energy

  • Aids sleep

  • Raises awareness of feelings and emotions

  • Improves overall health.

One step at a time - a group session

Let's break this down so you can get an idea of how a breathwork session is structured. (You can also go to this page, get comfortable and listen to this 10 min intro.)

I've listed below how a session progresses and note that this is within a group environment but one to ones follow the same theme. At all times, I will be guiding and coaching you and there is always the opportunity to ask questions, there's never any pressure and you can come back to your regular breath rhythm whenever you need to.

Whatever your experience you can be sure that it’s just the beginning of an incredible journey. Welcome to the world of Conscious Connected Breathing!

Introduction and setting the scene

We'll come together in an environment that will immediately put you at ease. I will welcome everyone; we then set the intention for the session thereby creating a safe, open atmosphere for exploration.

At this point, I will also describe the workings and benefits of breathwork, followed by a demonstration of the technique.

Groundness and awareness

Ideally lying on your back, in a slightly elevated position or in a position that's more comfortable for you, the whole group is then invited to breathe together. This involves closing our eyes, noticing body sensations, tuning into breath. This grounding practice helps shift attention away from busy minds toward internal awareness.

Learning the breath pattern

As we progress into learning the technique behind Conscious Connected Breathwork, you will be aware of elongating the inhale, shortening the exhale, and removing pauses between breaths. This rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting deep calm.

Guided breathwork session

You will gently move through the breathing sequence under my experienced guidance. A calming voice helps guide transitions, inviting everyone to sink deeper into relaxed, rhythmic breathing.

Emotional release and reflection

As the breath flows, emotional shifts may occur - such as releasing tension, memory, or lingering thoughts. I encourage observation and it's important to allow these sensations without judgment. At this point, you will have your own very individual experience. Sensations of physical and/or emotional release are not uncommon and most people experience an increasing sense of peace and wellbeing.

Awareness back in the room

With a gentle return as you reconnect to the room, taking a graceful stretch or sigh - ending with an invitation to carry the calm into the rest of the day or retreat.

Feedback and sharing

After the breath session, you are invited to share the experience - often expressive words like 'lighter', 'clearer', or 'energised' emerge, reinforcing the power of shared breathwork in a safe setting.

Practical integration tips

The session concludes with practical advice - how to incorporate conscious breathing into daily routines, quick reset techniques during meetings perhaps, or stress-relief methods between tasks, whatever you're doing and wherever you are.
